Saint Anthony’s Fire

Saint Anthony’s fire was name given to ergotism during the middle ages. Caused by the fungus ergot contaminating cereal crops, its hallucinatory symptoms were thought responsible for the dancing plague of 1518. The relics of Saint Genevieve were invoked to cure an outbreak in 1129.
